Oban and Isle of Mull - May 2006

OBAN - town on Scottish mainland, near Mull.

View from our Bed and Breakfast room over town of Oban. Isle of Mull on the background.

Nice garden in Oban.

A folly in Oban, looking like the Coliseum.

FERRY from Oban to Craignure, on Mull.

Mariner Nikki setting sail from Oban port for Craignure on the Isle of Mull, a 46 day (or was it minute?) voyage away.

View of Oban from ferry.

Another view of Oban. Aforementioned folly in the skyline.

A castle on the Isle of Mull, viewed from the ferry.

Croig, on West coast of Mull.

Bluebells were everywhere on Mull.

And other pretty flowers. (valkovuokko, sinivuokko, jne. :-))

Red arrow marks an Eagle - honest!

Croig is in the middle of nowhere, only a handful of houses scattered around, and a barren landscape with pretty views of neighbouring small islands (e.g. Tiree?). Croig also has a Bed and Breakfast.

Roads on the island were littered with sheep, these ones seemed to have tyre marks on them. The following morning, they were asleep in the middle of the road.

Trip to Sea Eagle hide, viewing two chicks in nest.

The Sea Eagle hide was in the middle of Mull, in a scenic location. This is part of the group af about 20, that went with us. Kate on the left, David next to her. The nest was in the distance, in the middle of the picture, left of David's head (and about 400-500 meters in front of him).

Another view from the hide.

Pictures from a walk near Tobermory.

The picture isn't great, but I had to include it, because David looks so scary in it, that he could easily be in the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest entry. ;-)

Beatiful day, beautiful views.

Ditto.

Ditto.

By a coincidence, this picture turned out a bit arty.

Rhododendrons were going strong.

Picturesque little pond/lake.

Little sheep.

Tobermory - the main town on Mull.

Tobermory main street is very pretty...

...as you can see.

This whiskey distillery has been going (on and off) since 1700's. It is the only working one on Mull.

The prettiest butcher's sign in Tobermory.

Tobermory from a bit further away.

A trip to Isle of Ulva.

On the road to Ulva. You can see, why he's taking a piccie, can't you? Kate's rushing to do the same. Ulva is on the background, over the water.

The motor, which negotiated 1001 miles of these single-track roads.

Jean and Kate on Ulva, with Ben More (at just short of 1000 meters the highest mountain on Mull) on the background.

The speck in the distance is Speedy Gonzliffe. I couldn't keep up with his walking pace!

More bluebells.

Kate and Jean, with that chap Ben again.

This must be Ben's farming gear.

View from as high as we got on Ulva. "Ulva" is a Norse word, meaning "wolf". That must be where the Finnish "ulvoa" (=to howl) comes from...

Noah's boat? Ben lurking on the background.

Calgary Beach, West coast of Mull. "The" Calgary in Canada was named after this two-horse settlement (definitely not a town). Very nice beach, they have.

Craignure On the way back.

The weather had been good all the time, apart from when we were just leaving. Got the first rain on us, and the mountains were snow capped - in late May!

This is the Craignure-Oban ferry.

Lighthouse looking very moody and Scottish.

Mariner Nikki looking a bit colder than on the way in.
